Alaska

Amazing Vistas

We booked a helicopter but couldn’t take it because of the weather. We decided to walk around Juneau and stopped for a bite to eat. No sooner had we placed the order and the mobile rang. It was the helicopter company. The weather had cleared, and they wanted to know if we were still interested. Well of course we were.

Once aboard we were off. Flying between two beautiful mountains, seeing the lush green forest turn to snow and after a while, glaciers. It was an amazing site to see. The glaciers broke up and opened upon a lake and a couple of small islands. You could see the glacier face like a huge wall in front of us with cracks and giant slabs about to break away at any moment.

After flying around for a wonderful view, we were off again. This time flying over the glacier. The ice was a beautiful blue white. The pilot found a spot and we were able to land. You could see the cracks and places where the water flowed underneath.

Back into the air.  More glaciers waterfalls and green forests.  Everything was stunning.  Finally, the pilot landed on the top of a mountain.  He made a point of telling us not to go too far and you could see why.  Over a three thousand foot drop on either side not too far from where we landed.  It seemed like we could see 100 miles.  We did not even notice the cold. Everything was so crisp and clear.

Honestly, it was like being in a different world.  So quite and peaceful, so amazingly beautiful.  Unlike anything I had ever seen up to that point in my life.

Once in Skagway, we were ready for our next helicopter ride. Like before, this one took us between mountains but over snow a lot sooner. We followed the ravines, saw some beautiful snow-capped mountains, finally over this massive glacier.

What an amazing sight, looping around and flying over mountaintops. Flying up over a ridge we dipped down into this valley. This was a glacier being fed on three different sides. Three huge ice packs all coming together in this one huge bowl. We sat down at the base camp and got to look around. Everywhere we could see, besides the basecamp, was mountains or beautiful white pack ice.  Here is where we took our dog sled ride.
